Kokoen Garden

Kokoen Garden was a recent addition to the area west of Himeji Castle. The garden covers about 3.5 hectares of land. It was built in 1992 on the former feudal lord’s residence known as Nishi Oyashiki. The garden was constructed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Himeji. Kokoen has nine gardens, which are separated by mud walls topped with tiles. Each one has a different style, but are reminiscent of the Edo Period. The garden that was part of the residence features a pond with a waterfall and tea garden for visitors to enjoy a relaxing cup of green tea. The ponds in the garden have a mirror like surface, which are symbolic of fine Japanese water gardens. Another reason why there are nine gardens is so visitors can enjoy unique views every season.
