Rikugien Garden (六義園) was first built around the 1700 for the 5th Shogun of the Tokugawa Clan. The landscape garden is considered one of the most beautiful in Tokyo. Rikugien literally translates to “six poems garden.” Inside the area it reproduces 88 miniature versions of scenes from famous poems. It is a great example of the strolling gardens that existed back in the Edo Period (1603-1867). There is a large pond in the center, which is surrounded by man-made hills and forests. All of it is connected through a network of trails that covers the spacious grounds. Along the northwestern shore of the pond is the Fukiage Chaya, a teahouse where you can rest and have some tea. It is also one of the best places to see autumn foliage in Tokyo.
