The Usuki Samurai District is located at the center of Usuki city, which is famous for the well preserved residential samurai buildings. Nioza Historical road is regarded as the landmark of the former samurai district, which stretches along a 200 meter alley filled with traditional buildings and temples. While many samurai districts have been destroyed through time, Usuki Samurai District can still offer visitors today a look into feudal Japan, a time when samurai warriors were on the top of the society rankings. Everyday objects used in the household are shown in the Inaba Residence as well as the Marumo Residence. Simple design with traditional Japanese tatami mats along with open walled living interior and a Japanese garden contribute to the residence for the lords. The Ruins of Usuki Castle nearby the samurai district is now a neighborhood park for locals to relax and enjoy. Most of the buildings were destroyed through time, with only a turret and gate remaining of this once grand castle of feudal Japan. Neighboring shopping streets provide local specialties, crafts and souvenirs for guests only available in this area.
