Narai Post Town

Narai Post Town

Narai is located in Shiojiri city, which is part of Nagano Prefecture. Back in the Edo Period the area flourished as a post town and was known as “Narai of a thousand houses.” It has been made into one of Japan’s Nationally Designated Architectural Preservation Sites. The structures in the town have been preserved to look like it did during the Edo Period. Along the main road you can see the restored houses and among them are two former residences that are open to the public. The Nakamura Residence has displays of artifacts that once belonged to the original owners. The Kamidonya Shiryokan was the former residence of a wholesaler and has a small garden in the back of the house. There is also the Narai Notice Board where the decrees and proclamations of the Shogunate were written during the Edo Period.
