Art House Project

The Art House Project are a collection of abandoned structures including houses, workshops and temples located within the small town of Honmura on the eastern coast of Naoshima Island renovated into unique venues dedicated towards contemporary art. The process began in 1998 with Kadoya, which was a 200 year old traditional Japanese home, now housing artworks featuring digital and LED displays while keeping the oriental aspect of the venue. Besides Kadoya, the art projects comprises of six other locations including Kinza, Minamidera, Go’o Shrine, Gokaisho, Haisha, and Ishibashi. Visitors can explore the venues with each structure unique to its own designs located within residential areas, giving visitors a chance to interact with the Japanese locals. The atmosphere of the area also provides a special sense of history layered within the community, characterized by the foreign travelers and modern arts to the traditional aspects this rural town in Naoshima Island, Japan.
