The Ohara Museum of Art was founded in 1930 in
commemoration to Western-style painter Kojima Torajiro.
It was the first Western art museum in Japan. The
museum’s Main Gallery includes masterpieces by
Picasso, El Greco, Monet, Gauguin, Modigliani, Rodin,
and more. The featured collections consist of various
time periods with artists of different nationalities.
The building beside the Main Gallery, known as the
Annex, highlights many works by Japanese artists. It also
houses the Craft Art Gallery, which displays ceramics,
woodblock prints, and more. There is also the Asiatic Art
Gallery, which consists of Egyptian artifacts and Chinese
antiques.
The museum’s final building is the Kojima Museum.
Kojima Torajiro was a Western-style painter that studied
art in Europe. The founder of the museum, Ohara
Magosaboro, respected Torajiro’s talent and attitude
towards art. Many of the museum’s main highlights were
purchased by Torajiro on behalf of Magosaboro.
Magosaboro opened the museum a year after Torajiro’s
death.
