Shikoku Mura

Shikoku Mura is an open air museum located on a hillside at the base of Yashima featuring relocated buildings from all over the island. The park opened in 1976 with an area covering 50,000 square meters filled with traditional houses, storage structures, an art gallery, and many other important cultural buildings. Visitors can explore the area to gain a better understanding of the history and culture of Shikoku Island among the many buildings, 4 of which have been designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, 3 designated as prefectural cultural properties, and 22 as cultural assets. The architectural details of Shikoku Mura are noticed with every step, from the natural stone steps, fences reinforced with ropes in traditional fashion, to the seasonal flowers along the scenic roads. Other popular structures include a kabuki theater hosting special performances for visitors to experience and a suspension bridge made of vine, the same design as the original located at Iya Valley of Tokushima Prefecture. The Shikoku Mura Gallery designed by Ando Tadao houses contemporary art including paintings and sculptures, adding a mix to the cultural atmosphere of the park. Visitors can learn about the production of sugar and soy sauce in the traditional facilities, which are 2 of the main export goods of Shikoku Island. Roses and tulips contribute to the scenic atmosphere along with other flowers offered to travelers during trips for all seasons.
