On January 17th, 1995, Hyogo prefecture had huge earthquake. The magnitude was 7.3, and it was one of the worst earthquakes in Japan. More than 60,000 people died and 43,000 people were injured. Many houses were destroyed, and more than 300,000 people had to see refuge. Especially Kobe city had very big damage, because many researchers did not predict that the Kobe area would have huge earthquake. The buildings of Kobe were not built to withstand the magnitude of the earthquake.

The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake memorial museum has many information about the earthquake to keep in our mind what we have gone through. The museum depicts how horrible of a tragedy was by displaying images of the damage it caused. There is also a session to talk with people who had survived the earthquake. Also they display the process that Kobe city had been through to recover. They also play short movie about the earthquake, and this museum is also a research facility. We can see research being conducted about earthquakes and disaster prevention.
