The Himeyuri Peace Museum is dedicated towards the 240 female high school students and teachers who joined together to form a special nursing unit for the Japanese Army during World War 2. A large stone monument greets visitors entering this museum followed by a unique cave which offers a view of the harsh environments the young women had to hide in during this dark time in history. Visitors can learn about the harsh conditions and history from life-size models along with a screening area showing videos of interviews from survivors of this group. Towards the end of the museum, names and photos of those who lost their lives to war are displayed, a reminder of the tragic consequences of war. Although the unit was disbanded towards the end of the war, only a hand full of students survived the fate of warfare, with most of which ending their own lives towards the end of the war.
