Kurobe Gorge was created by the Kurobe River and is one of the deepest gorges in Japan. The forested ravine is located in the Northern Japan Alps and has nearly vertical cliffs. Nearby the gorge is the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, which can be accessed from a different area. The main attraction is the Kurobe Gorge Railway, which was originally built to help constructing the Kurobe Dam. Small sightseeing trains operate along the 20 kilometer rail from Unazuki to Keyakidaira Station. The 80-minute train ride crosses over 20 bridges and goes through more than 40 tunnels. Along with the panoramic views of the beautiful ravine, the train stops as various stations for visitors to get off and explore the area. Unazuki Station is where the Unazuki Onsen is located. There you can hot spring baths surrounded by the beautiful virgin forest. The train operates from mid-April to November and is the most popular in the autumn season. From mid-October to mid-November the forested slopes turn in to bright red and orange.
