Nagatoro is located deep in the mountains in the western region of Saitama Prefecture. It is a small scenic town north of Chichibu. Nagatoro is designated as a prefectural nature park and preserve. Running through the center of the town is the Arakawa River. A five-minute walk from the main street of Iwadatami Dori is the Iwadatami Rock formations. There you will find booths selling tickets to go on the river cruises that go through the gorge. The boats are steered by two individuals using long poles to navigate the waters. If you prefer to hike through the Iwadatami Rock formations, then instead of heading south by boat just walk north. The river banks do become very steep as you travel. Keep in mind that there will be wildlife around so it is best to be cautious as you hike through the area.
