Oboke Gorge

The Oboke Gorge is located near the entrance to the Iya Valley at the heart of Shikoku Island in Japan. The unique V shaped gorge has been formed by the currents of the Yoshino River with jagged stones walls alongside the valley giving it the name “Big Dangerous Steps”. This geological wonderland can be explored by the sightseeing cruises drifting down the Yoshino River, which have been operational for over a century. While the neighboring Koboke Gorge can be experienced with adventurous rafting and kayaking activities along some of the most rapid flows of Japan. Observation platforms and local tourist train rides offer a full view of this hidden natural gem of Shikoku Island. Other attractions include hot spring hotels of the area with varies unique museums for visitors to explore. At the Lapis Oboke, visitors can learn about the geological formations and gemstones of the area with the combination of a café and shops. Travels can also learn about the fictional Yokai monsters according to local folk tales in this museum. A relaxing hot spring bath is a must at the hotels providing a scenic view of the natural surroundings with flowing waters.
