Takachiho Gorge

Many refer to Takachiho Gorge as both a hidden gem of Japan, as well as one of the natural wonders located at Miyazaki Prefecture Japan. The V shaped gorge was formed by rapid cooling of volcanic basalt columns due to the eruption of Mount Aso over 120,000 years ago. Flaky stones by the side of the cliff along with twists and turns resemble the scales and form of a dragon. Rental boats are available to provide visitors a view from below as you row down the Gokase River cutting through the Takachiho Gorge. This route offers a close encounter with the 17 meter high Minainotaki Waterfall with ducks swimming alongside the calm waters. Hiking routes are also available for a view from above with the path leading to the Takachiho Shrine, which is famous for the special dance featured every night known as the Yokagura. The performance consists of 33 episodes of plays reacts the stories from Shinto mythology. Masked dancers with traditional clothing and instruments are used during each dance, a form of performance art which has been passed down for generations. The most famous would be the silly dance performed by The Goddess Amenouzume in order to lure out Amaterasu from hiding in Japanese Shinto mythology. During summer time, the gorge is illuminated with flashing lights until late into the night. Other attractions include fishing ponds, an aquarium and souvenir shops which are popular among local families and foreign visitors.
