Mount Shosha (書写山, Shoshazan) is a few kilometers away from Himeji Station. It is home to the many structures of Engyoji Temple that span all over the mountain. To get to the peak, there are various ways to reach it. The Mount Shosha Ropeway is a short bus ride away from Himeji Station and from the cable car you can have great views of Himeji. There is also a hiking trail that will take about one or two hours to go through depending on your pace. Engyoji Temple was one of the filming sites for the 2003 movie “The Last Samurai.” The three great buildings Daikodo, Jikido, and Jogyodo appeared in the film. Engyoji is a popular place to view the changing autumn leaves. Temple lodging is available at the Engyoji Kaikan.
