The town has a variety of baths, where many of them have both segregated and mixed gender baths. It is recommended that the best way to enjoy the town is by staying overnight at a ryokan with hot spring baths. During the daytime the public bath houses and several ryokans open their baths to non-staying guests for a fee ranging from 500 to 2000 yen. Hirayu is the oldest and largest onsen town in Okuhida. It is said to have been discovered around the 1560s by Takeda Shingen's troops when they crossed through the Okuhida region. Today the town has many ryokan, ranging in size from small family run places to large complexes. Its hot spring waters are said to cure neuralgia, sensitivity to cold and skin disease.
