Yudanaka Onsen has a long establishment history as a hot spring resort like the nearby Shibu Onsen. Some parts of the resort town have undergone development, but as you continue up a certain slope you can see your surroundings change to a more traditional atmosphere. Near the onsen town is Jigokudani Monkey Park, which is famous for its snow monkeys bathing in the man-made onsens. In Yudanaka the most famous public bath house is the Oyu no Yu that has been around for over 1300 years. Outside of the bath house is a stone monument of Issa Kobayashi, a famous poet from the Edo Period, with a haiku he wrote inscribed on it. Right outside of Yudanaka Station there is the Kaede no Yu, a free foot bath for travelers to relax in after their train trip.
