Meiji-jingu Shrine

The Meiji Jingu or Meiji Shrine was built to venerate Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken who opened up Japan to Western culture and influence. The Shinto shrine is located in the Harajuku area near the Yoyogi station and is next to Yoyogi Park. Meiji Jingu is surrounded by 100,000 trees of 350 varieties and was donated from different regions across Japan. Construction of the shrine was completed in 1920 and is situated in the middle of the forest. Those who visit the place can participate in Shinto related activities like writing your wish on ema (wooden plates). This shrine is one of the most popular to visit in Japan with an estimated 3 million visitors per year.

Upon reaching the grounds you will be greeted by a giant torii gate and beyond that is a line of cedar trees leading towards the main building. The Inner Garden of the Meiji Jingu has over 150 species of irises that bloom in late June. It is said that Emperor Meiji designed the garden for his wife. North of the main shrine is the Treasure House. It exhibits portraits of the previous emperors as well as clothing worn by the Meiji royal family. Be aware that on holidays, Emperor Meiji’s birthday and New Years the Meiji Jingu is very crowded.
