Amano-iwato Shrine

Located 10 kilometers away from Takachiho near Iwato River from the famous cave which has been referred to as the location where Amaterasu hid according to Japan mythological stories. Takachiho is known throughout Japan as the site where the sun goddess Amaterasu, hid inside a cave in order to escape the teasing from her brother Susanoo. Without sunlight, life on Earth started fading away, more than 800 deities of Shinto gods tried to persuade Amaterasu to come out of hiding. Finally it was the work of a silly dance by fellow god which lured the goddess out of hiding. The shrine is surrounding by trees and nature providing a relaxing atmosphere for travelers enjoy. Although the legendary cave cannot be entered, an observation deck offers a view of this iconic location in Takachiho. Piles of stone are stacked along the Iwato River by previous visitors while strolling down the walking paths. The paths lead to a shrine known as Amano Yasukawa, which according to locals was the spot where the Shinto Gods discussed and planned on how to lure Amaterasu out from the cave. This location is another one of the Japanese power spots popular among locals and foreign visitors in search of a more spiritual experience in Japan.
