Chikurin-in Temple

Chikurin-in Temple was originally called Tsubakiyama Temple and was said to be built by Shotoku-Taishi. In the past, this was the location that accommodated Buddhist monks practicing asceticism in the mountains, but now is open to all travelers looking to stay at a traditional Japanese hotel. Chikurin-in Temple is especially popular during the cherry blossom season. The Gunpoen Garden was said to be made by tea master Sen-no-Rikyu and is one of the most famous Japanese style gardens in Japan. The large pond in the garden is surrounded by dozens of cherry trees. The back garden known as “Tennin-no-Sakura,” has 220-year old weeping cherry blossom trees. It is said those in the garden are the oldest living cherry trees in the Yoshino area. In any season, the garden is a beautiful place to visit and has a nominal entrance fee.
