Garan is located on Mount Koya and is said to be the original location Kukai (Kobo Daishi) started the new Shingon Buddhism religion. Out of the many structures in the area, the Kondo Hall and Konpon Daito Pagoda are the two travelers and worshipers come to see. Even though he began building the structures he was unable to finish it himself and left it to his successors. The Kondo Hall has been burned down seven times in history with the current building being reconstructed in 1932. It is the location most of the ceremonies take place. Konpon Daito Pagoda is right next to the Kondo Hall and is the first structure many visitors see when arriving at this temple measuring around 50 meters high. A statue of Dainichi Nyorai is at the center surrounded by other statues and painted pillars creating this important structure to Japanese Buddhism.
