Toshodaiji Temple

Toshodaiji Temple

Toshodaiji Temple was established in 759 by a Tang Dynasty Chinese monk named Jianzhen during the Nara period. The temple is constructed with a Chinese Tang Dynasty architectural style, which is what makes this temple special. The golden hall is not only the oldest constructed building in the temple, but also a Japanese national treasure. At this location visitors can pray to the Buddhist statues inside, but pictures are not allowed to be taken of the statues. Over the thousand years of civil war, cultural revolutions, and commercialization of temples within China, ancient well preserved temples with Tang architectural style like Toshodaiji Temple would be rare to see even in China. Many Visitors travel to Nara in order to get the feel of the environment and admire the ancient Tang Dynasty architectural marvel still preserved in Japan.
