Hasedera Temple

Hasedera Temple

Hasedera Temple is part of the Jodo Sect and is located along the slope of a wooded hill in central Kamakura. The temple is famous for its eleven headed wooden statue of Kannon, Goddess of Mercy. At 9.18 meters the gilded statue is one of the largest wooden sculptures in Japan. It is housed in the Kannon-do Hall, where visitors can see the statue. There is a legend that says it was carved from the same tree that another Kannon statue was carved out, which is located in the Hasedera Temple in Nara Prefecture. Next to the main hall is the Kannon Museum, where more the temple treasures can be seen for a nominal fee. At the entrance of the temple is a garden with a pond for visitors to enjoy. There is also a temple hall that is dedicated to Benten, Goddess of Beauty and Wealth, in the garden.
