Dejima

Dejima was a fan shaped man-made island located by the bay of Nagasaki to segregate the Portuguese residents from the local Japanese during the Edo period. For close to 2 centuries the Portuguese traders resided on this island due to the isolation policy established by the Tokugawa Shogunate, making Dejima the single place in Japan to trade directly with the outside world. With an area of around 2.2 acres and linked to the mainland by a small bridge, this small island was heavily guarded by a number of Japanese officials, night watchmen and gatekeepers. Religious activities were strictly prohibited due to the ban on Christianity, which the Tokugawa family feared of the growing population resulting in rebellion. Dejima was merged with Nagasaki in the 20th century after the surrounding area was reclaimed and undergone harbor reconstruction. Many of the various warehouses, residences, walls and gates still remain on site of the once isolated island. Today many reconstructions are being made to ultimately reshape this modern area into the once isolated historical island of Japan. Travelers can explore this area which was once forbidden for locals to enter with only a few exceptions to officials, translators, carpenters, cooks and samurai learning the Portuguese language.
