The Daio Wasabi Farm is located in Azumino city near Matsumoto and is one of the largest wasabi farms in Japan. The wasabi fields are maintained with networks of small streams utilizing the water from the Northern Alps. The fields are shielded from the sunlight from May to October with black tarp sheets. Along one of the walking trails by the river is an old fashioned water wheel that was constructed for Akira Kurosawa’s 1989 “Dreams” film and has been left behind. Another site of interest is the Daio Shrine, which is said to enshrine the spirit of the ancient local hero. The cave related to the local legend can be found near the shrine. From April to late October, short tours on inflatable boats are available to enjoy the serene scenery for a nominal fee. The shops and restaurants feature a wide variety of wasabi flavored products including wasabi juice.
