Hakone Shrine

Hakone Shrine is the most important Shinto shrine in Hakone. It is located at the foot of Mount Hakone along the shores of Lake Ashi and its buildings are mostly hidden by the dense forest. Even though the shrine structures are concealed by trees it can still be identified by the large torii gate placed in the lake. There are two more gates on the main street of Moto-Hakone that will lead you to the shrine. The stairs that lead to the shrine are lined with lanterns through the forest until you reach the main hall. Surrounding the main building are tall trees that give it a sense of serenity. There are times when it would be shrouded by mist and give it a mysterious feeling. Nearby Hakone Shrine is another one called Mototsumiya, which is located at the summit of Komagatake. It can be reached by the Komagatake Ropeway or by hiking the trails.
