Japanese Sword Museum

The Japanese Sword Museum (刀剣博物館), also known as Touken Hakubutsukan, has a collection of over 150 items that range from swords to documents on metal working. The small museum is run by the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Art Swords. The organization was founded by the Ministry of Education in 1948 after American forces returned the many katana (Japanese swords). Amongst the collection there are a few that are designated as National Treasures like the ones made by Taima Kuniyuki, Rai Kuniyuki, and Senjuin Nobuyoshi. The dozens of swords on display have English explanations on the history on the item. The exhibits of Koto (old swords) and Shinto (new word) are held to show various works done by famous swordsmiths. In the Archives Room you can find about 1,500 historical documents on swords.
