Morning Markets (Asaichi)

The Takayama morning market is one of the biggest in Japan. There are two morning markets (朝市, Asaichi) held in Takayama daily. It usually begins around 6:30 am (7:00 in winter) to noon. The Jinya-mae Market is in front of the Takayama Jinya and the Miyagawa Market is along the Miyagawa River. At the Miyagawa market there are sixty shops and stalls are open. The shops and stalls span across approximately 350 meters from the Kaji Bashi Bridge to the Yayoi Bashi Bridge along. The stalls on river side sell vegetables, fruits, pickles and spices. Shops on the other side sell Japanese sweets and crafts. Some shops sell Takayama local souvenirs including sarubobo dolls and Ichii Itto-bori wooden carvings. There are also other shops sell various items like Hello Kitty goods or unique snacks that are not found in other areas.
