Rinnoji Temple (輪王寺, Rinnoji) was first established in 766 by the Shodo Shonin, a Buddhist monk who introduced Buddhism to the Nikko area. The complex has 15 Buddhist temple buildings and the most famous of them is the Three Buddha Hall also known as Sanbutsudo. Inside Rinnoji Temple are large wooden statues of Amida, Bato-Kannon (Kannon with a horse head), and Senju-Kannon (Kannon with a thousand arms) which are coated with gold lacquer. Across from the Sanbutsudo is a treasure house that has Buddhist and Tokugawa items exhibited for the public to see. Located behind the treasure house is a small Japanese style garden called Shoyoen. It is a popular place to visit in the autumn season because of the maple leaves around the pond. The scenic garden is a great place to take a photo with the fall colored maple leaves. The peak time to see these autumn colors would be around the first half of November.
