Sapporo’s biggest entertainment neighborhood,
Susukino, which is similar to Shinjuku’s Kabukicho red
light district, is the number one place to go for the night
life. With that in mind, it should not come as a surprise
that expenses might run a little higher here than in other
parts of the city. Susukino covers almost 20 blocks of the
southern part from the city center. Within those 20 blocks
there are an estimated 4000 bars and restaurants.
In 1983 Susukino became known as one of the sites that
host the Snow Festival events every February in
Sapporo. Here, the ice sculpture competition is held as
well as the Queen of the Ice Beauty Contest. If visitors
miss a chance to see the Snow Festival, they can always
grab a bite to eat either some of the locally famous
Genghis Khan (barbecued mutton) nabe, or Susukino’s
Ramen Yokocho for those ramen fans. You can go
shopping in one of the oldest shopping centers in
Sapporo called Tanukikoji or go underground around
Sapporo Poletown.
