The Takayama Festival, which is held in spring (April 14 and 15) and autumn (October 9 and 10), is one of Japan's three most beautiful festivals alongside Kyoto's Gion Matsuri and the Chichibu Matsuri. If there is bad weather, the outer doors to the Yatai Kaikan are opened so visitors can see them. The floats in the museum are changed a few times a year. Four of the autumn festival's eleven floats (yatai) are exhibited at the Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan (高山祭屋台会館). The hall is located next to the Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine. The elaborately decorated floats are beautiful examples of Takayama's famous craftsmanship, which spans over several hundred years. The other floats are stored in special storehouses around the city, when they’re not in use.
