Togakushi Shrine is situated in the forested mountains and consists of a lower, middle and upper shrine. The shrine can be found northwest from the city center of Nagano. In Japan mythology, when the Sun Goddess hid herself in a cave, due to her brother’s cruel antics, the world was blanketed in darkness. The deities were able to lure out the Sun Goddess by performing a spectacular dance and the stone door hiding the goddess was thrown all the way to Togakushi by the deities. At the upper shrine the deities who grabbed and threw away the stone door are worshipped. The middle shrine worships the deities who conducted the dance performances. At the lower shrine there are a flight of stairs that leads to the praying hall. Along the path leading to the upper shrine are 300 tall cryptomeria trees, which pass through the Zuishinmon Gate. Near the upper shrine is the Togakure Ninpo Museum and the Kids Ninja Village is close to the middle shrine.
