Itsukushima Shrine

In 1996, the Itsukushima Shrine was inscribed on the World Heritage List for its outstanding architecture creatively integrated into its surrounding natural elements. It is located on Itsukushima Island, also known as Miyajima. The Itsukushima Shrine is best known for its floating torii gate, which is built in the sea. During high tide, the gate gives the illusion of floating on the water, but at low tide, you can walk up to the gate and see the foundation. This same effect applies to the shrine behind the torii gate. It is considered one of the best temples to visit because of this iconic torii gate.

Founded around the 12th century by powerful leader Taira no Kiyomori, the property reflects an excellent example of 12th and 13th-century Japanese construction style. The temple itself encompasses Japanese Shinto architecture, where a natural object becomes the main religious worship of that shrine. With the structures built on the sea and impressive mountains in the background, the shrine exhibits a high artistic and technical skill. Not only is it a Japanese standard of beauty, but also evidence of man-made achievements blended with nature, and an accomplishment of Taira no Kiyomori.

The Itsukushima Shrine holds a high authenticity for its religious and spiritual importance, scenic harmony, and outstanding architectural design. The property comprises of twenty buildings total, including the surrounding forest and sea in front of the shrine. The area has been properly preserved and maintained both culturally and naturally. The structure plans and exterior appearance remain in its original state. As an ancient place of religious worship of nature and for its scenic setting, the Itsukushima Shrine is designated as a National Treasure and Special Historic Site.
