14 days 13 nights

Study the traditional arts and crafts of Japan on our custom Japan Traditional Arts and Crafts Tour, including creative experiences in Tokyo, Hakone / Mount Fuji, Matsumoto, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, and Osaka.

The traditional arts and crafts of Japan – its painting, pottery, drama, even architecture – are famed throughout the world. In addition to these time-honored crafts, there are various other lesser-known traditional arts to be discovered. Explore both the popular and obscure Traditional Arts and Crafts of Japan on a two-week tour that features must-see cultural sights and immersive experiences in Tokyo, Hakone / Mount Fuji, Matusmoto, Takayama, Shirakawago, Kanazawa, Kyoto, and Osaka. For the first few days, explore the traditional arts to be found in Tokyo – Pottery galleries in Aoyama, a Kabuki performance at Kabukiza Theatre, the morning training at a Sumo Stable, the historic artifacts of the National Museum, and the architecture of Asakusa Sensoji Temple. Travel to the Hakone and Mount Fuji region where, in addition to admiring the spectacular scenery and iconic mountain, you’ll join an Experience learning about Yosegi Zaiku, the wood marquetry that creates, among other things, the famous Japanese puzzle boxes. Hakone has much to offer lovers of the arts: browse the creative outdoor structures of the Hakone Open Air Museum and admire the silk- dyed kimono at the Itchiku Kubota Art Museum.

Heading into the Japanese Alps, we take in Matsumoto and Takayama, which includes delightful visits to Matsumoto Castle, the Japan Ukiyo-e (wood-block printing) Museum, Takayama Morning Market, the Old Town, and the Matsuri no Mori “Festival Forest.” We travel from there to Kanazawa, stopping on the way at the UNESCO-protected village of Shirakawa- go, with its traditional thatch-roofed farmhouses built in the “gassho-zukuri” architectural style. Then, in Kanazawa, discover beautiful Kenrokuen Garden, explore the Nagamachi Samurai District, take a Gold Leaf Craft Workshop, and browse the ceramic works of the Kutani Kosen Kiln. Then, the tour reaches the ancient city of Kyoto – center of Japanese traditional art and culture for over a thousand years, where you will first visit a local wooden townhouse (machiya) to learn the arts of origami, calligraphy, and ikebana from a local expert. Other local experiences include tasting sake in the Fushimi Sake district, learning Zen meditation in a local temple, participating in a Green Tea Ceremony, trying on a stylish kimono, and tasting Kyoto Kaiseki Cuisine. You won’t miss out on the top temples and shrines in Kyoto; you’ll see Fushimi Inari Shrine with its hundreds of red gates, the Golden Pavilion’s shining phoenix, Kiyomizu Temple’s sacred springs, and Tenryuji Temple’s landscape garden.

Spend the final two days in Osaka, where you will visit the Osaka Castle, and the foodie district of Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi’s shopping arcades. You will also tour a Kitchen Knife factory in Sakai, visit a Bonsai Nursery, see a Noh performance, and tour the Suntory Yamazaki Whiskey Distillery, before the tour finally ends. Discover the delightful traditional arts and crafts of Japan on this two-week itinerary featuring top arts and crafts experiences in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kanazawa, Takayama, Matsumoto, Hakone, and Mount Fuji.
