Charms of Tohoku!
Start the tour with a ride on a bullet train up to Aomori,
home of the Aomori Nebuta Festival, and where
visitors to
the Nebuta Warasse can experience the festival
atmosphere year round. Tour the rice paddies of
Inakadate, where local farmers have turned Japan's
signature crop into Rice Paddy Art, with pictures of
famous
people, landmarks, and other artworks displayed in the
rice field by using a variety of rice types. Continuing
through Hirosaki and Kakunodate, we will explore
Hirosaki
Castle, Fujita Memorial Garden, and a local samurai
district for a deeper appreciation of local history. Local
culture meets the traditions of old Kyoto at Somaro
Tea
House, where the Sakata Maiko (apprentice geisha)
give
an entertaining performance.
Then the tour takes a spiritually refreshing turn as you
spend the day on Mount Haguro with the Yamabushi
mountain monks of the Shugendo sect, to whom
Japanese folk stories ascribe mystical properties.
While
here you can wear the traditional attire of a Yamabushi
monk and enjoy a hike with monk guides up to
Haguro-
san Shrine, where you will enjoy a lunch of healthy
vegetarian shojin ryori, or "monks' food". Experience
more
of the enchanting nature of the Tohoku region on a
riverboat ride down the Mogami River - featuring the
charming river songs sung by the boatmen, and a
leisurely
cruise around magnificent Matsushima Bay. Finally,
admire the wonders of Nikko on a tour of Toshogu
Shrine -
resting place of the first Tokugawa shogun.
