Join our Nakasendo Trail & Beyond Guided Tour, and discover the time-honored wonder and beauty of the Nakasendo Trail. Once stretching from Kyoto to Edo (Tokyo), the Nakasendo has largely been paved over by contemporary streets, but there are a few sections left that still preserve that special atmosphere from when the road was still walked by samurai. Experience four days of this historic path from Kiso-Hirasawa to Magome, enjoying enchanting natural landscapes and towns preserved in the style of the Edo period, making you feel as though you've stepped back in time to feudal Japan.

Our Nakasendo Hike starts in Kiso-Hirasawa, passing through Narai, taking a trail through the mountains over the Torii Pass. We arrive at Yabuhara, where we take a short train ride to Kiso-Fukushima. From there, we hike the Yogawa-michi path to Tsumago, a town that best maintains that time-honored Old Nakasendo atmosphere. Finally, we walk the well-preserved path from Tsumago to Magome - the end of our Nakasendo Journey.

In keeping with the active theme of these tours, we pair the Nakasendo Trail with exploratory walks around must-see Japan destinations, where we stop for memorable experiences. Walk the city streets of Tokyo to see Sensoji Temple, Ueno Park, and the Tokyo National Museum, and stop in Kappabashi to join a Food Sample Workshop, then explore Matsumoto Castle and take a Samurai Lesson. Admire temples in Kyoto such as Fushimi Inari, the Golden Pavilion, Ryoanji Temple, and Kiyomizu Temple, and stop at Kenninji Temple Tacchu Ryosokuin to learn about the Zen Meditation and Traditional Tea Ceremony. Try on a traditional kimono, and enjoy Kyoto cuisine while accompanied by an apprentice geisha (maiko).

Travel to Nara to see magnificent Todaiji Temple and greet the wild deer in the nearby park, and take a Calligraphy lesson from a local master. Breathe in the spiritual atmosphere of Koyasan as you see Kongobuji Temple, Danjo Garan, and Okunoin Temple, and walk a portion of the nearby pilgrimage trail. Stroll Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa, the UNESCO World Heritage village of Shirakawago, the Peace Memorial Park of Hiroshima, and Miyajima's Itsukushima Shrine.

As the Nakasendo Trail boasts beauties in every season, we have a range of seasonal activities and destinations that complement the old trail's classical ambience and natural splendor. See the spectacular cherry blossoms of Mount Yoshino in spring, and the Autumn Leaves of Nara's Yagyu Kaido Takisaka Path. Experience the Fuji Shibazakura Festival in mid-spring, and enjoy one of Takayama's seasonal Spring and Autumn Festivals.

Hike the enchanting Nakasendo Trail on one of AJT's Nakasendo Trail & Beyond Guided Tours, and experience Japan's timeless beauty and historic wonders. In addition to the ample walking and hiking, you will have the chance to experience Japan's public transportation system, and you will be accompanied by a friendly English-speaking hiking guide.

We don't just walk!! Our Nakasendo Trail & Beyond Guided Tour combine enjoyment, discovery, and understanding with ample time to appreciate the history, culture, and nature of Japan. Feel free to click on the tours below to learn more about the selected itinerary and its seasonal changes.

Activity Level: Intense
Our Intense tours generally have dedicated days of trail walking, with some days of over four hours and with some ascent and/or descent.

Who is an Intense tour designed for?
