This tour serves as an excellent introduction to the art and craftsmanship behind the famous Japanese garden. You will be able to travel through the Kansai region of Japan, including Osaka, Nara, and Kyoto. You’ll also travel west into Chugoku where you will visit Okayama, Matsue, and Himeji. Along the way, you will visit traditional and modern gardens on temple grounds or within art museums. You will even have the opportunity to visit a private garden and meet with a professional garden designer who will be able to give you a unique perspective on this craft which is appreciated all over the world.

After arriving into Osaka, you will travel to the ancient city of Nara. Serving as Japan’s capital a number of times before Kyoto, this city is steeped in history and culture. The main attraction here is Nara park where you will see many wild Sika deer roaming freely. Surrounding the park are temples, shrines, museums, and the lovely Isuien Garden. A perfect example of the use of borrowed scenery, you will be able to see Todaiji temple from this garden.

In the sacred land surrounding Mt. Koya, you will be able to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese Shingon Buddhism. Not only will you be able to enjoy the sight of some of the oldest temples in Japan, but you will also spend the night in one such temple to get a deeper understanding of the life of a monk. In Himeji, you will visit one of the only surviving original castles in Japan and its adjacent garden. In Matsue, you will get to see another example of an original castle. Nearby, you can also stroll through the old samurai district. You will also be able to see a unique Peony garden on the outskirts of the city. After traveling to Okayama, you will be able to see one of the most famous gardens in Japan: Korakuen Garden. Another of the 3 most famous and well-regarded gardens in Japan is Ritsurin Koen Garden, which you will visit in Takamatsu.

Finally, travel to the longest reigning capital of Japan: Kyoto. The home of the emperor and seat of the government for over 1000 years, Kyoto is steeped in a rich history beyond compare. In addition to must-see sites such as the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Golden Pavilion, Nijo Castle, and Fushimi Inari Shrine, you will also be able to see a number of unique sites. Kyoto is especially known for its crafting – including that of traditional gardens. While in the city, you will visit some of the most well-known gardens in the city and even two private gardens that your group will have to themselves.
