season.
This 14-day itinerary combines our Charms of Tohoku
Tour
with our wildly popular Golden Route Japan Autumn
Tour
for a memorable journey of magnificent nature scenes,
must-see monuments, and rare cultural experiences.
The tour begins with an exploration of Japan’s Tohoku
region, taking the Shinkansen bullet train up to Aomori
prefecture, then taking a winding, leisurely route back
down to Tokyo. On the way, we will visit the village of
Inakatade, and the Rice Paddy Art. The villagers take
different varieties of rice and grow them in patterns
and
colors to create portraits of famous people, pop
culture,
landmarks, monuments, and even other artworks. We
will
learn about the life of a Yamabushi monk on Mount
Haguro, one of the sacred Three Mountains of Dewa,
as
you put on the traditional monk attire, eat a vegetarian
meal of shojin ryori “monks’ food”, and take climb up a
stone staircase past a five-storied pagoda to reach
Haguro-san Shrine. Other charms of Tohoku you will
see
on this tour include a riverboat Mogami River Gorge as
you are regaled by singing boatmen, a performance by
the
Sakata Maiko (geisha apprentices) at the Somaro
Teahouse, and a cruise around the pine-covered
islands of
Matsushima Bay before we make our way to Tokyo
and
the “Golden Route”.
The Golden Route takes our guests through the most
popular must-see sights of Japan. A day of
sightseeing in
Tokyo takes you to Tokyo Tower and Asakusa Sensoji
Temple, with the addition a lesson in learning how to
prepare sushi. If the weather is favorable, we will go to
the
5th station of Mount Fuji and take a ride on the
Hakone
Ropeway to the volcanic pools of Owakudani. Then
we will
discover the UNESCO Heritage Temples and Shrines
of
Kyoto and Nara, including the thousand red torii gates
of
Fushimi Inari Shrine, the wooden veranda of Kiyomizu
Temple, and the Golden Pavilion. At last, we explore
Osaka’s Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi districts – the
city’s
most popular shopping areas.
