The Akan Mashu National Park in a forested
park
area in eastern Hokkaido well known for three pristine
lakes – Lake Akan, Lake Mashu, and Lake Kussharo.
Established in 1934, the Akan
Mashu
National Park is one
of the oldest national parks in Hokkaido. Lake Akan,
Lake
Mashu, and Lake Kussharo form the central feature of
the
park, with crystal clear waters inhabited by large, round
marimo algae. Within Lake Akan, the marimo can grow
to
be around the size of soccer balls. Lake Mashu is
considered the most breathtaking lake of the three, and
is
a peacefully clear lake – attractive in full sunlight,
mysterious in heavy fog. Lake Kussharo is the largest of
the three, with a set of outdoor hot spring baths situated
on the shore. This park serves as the habitat of a variety
of wildlife, and is known as the wintering grounds for the
graceful Whooper Swan. According to local legend,
Lake
Kussharo also conceals the mysterious lake monster,
nicknamed “Kusshi”.
Many also come to the park to walk around Mount Io.
Also
known as “Sulfur Mountain”, this active volcano draws
tourists to view its great, yellow steaming vents, which
can
be viewed up close, while walking around well-
maintained
hiking trails.
