Japan Tours in February

Japan Tours in February

A February tour of Japan has so many gorgeous sights and unforgettable experiences that can’t be enjoyed in any other month. Japan cultural events include some unmissable Hokkaido winter events that only occur at this time of year, unbelievable cherry blossoms if you can’t possibly wait until March, as well as Japan’s usual breathtaking winter charm that arrives in layers of fresh-fallen snow.

A special festival takes place in February within the town of Kawazu – the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival. Although cherry blossom trees are heralds of springtime in Japan, opening to full bloom from late March to mid-April, the Kawazu cherry tree is a special kind that blooms a full month earlier than any of the other sakura in Japan. Only in February can you enjoy a stroll along the Kawazu River under cherry blossoms as bright and fluffy as clouds of cotton candy. The city celebrates these early spring beauties with festival stalls selling cherry-flavored snacks and other souvenirs, as well as various other local events including nighttime illumination.

The month of February is also the opening of the Hokkaido winter festival season, which is an absolute must for any who plan a visit to Japan’s north island. While many cities in Hokkaido prefecture have fantastic winter festivals, the Sapporo Snow Festival is the crème-de-la-crème. Famous landmarks, popular characters, and larger-than-life dioramas are constructed entirely of snow and ice by participating teams. Each creation is intricately detailed, and some are even big enough to walk inside! Massive snow slides and an ice sculpture exhibition are constructed at other sites in the city. For a snow festival with a more romantic atmosphere, plan a trip to Otaru City for the Otaru Snow Light Path. The sight of the gas-lamps illuminating the heritage buildings beside the Otaru Canal, accented by the golden glow of hundreds of little snow lanterns really warms the heart in this lovely vision from a winter dream. Plan some time in your itinerary to head out into the Hokkaido countryside to appreciate the natural beauties of winter. Take an ice- breaker cruise off the coast of Abashiri, admire the frozen waterfalls at Sounkyo Gorge, and watch the dance of the dainty red-crowned crane.

February is an excellent time to journey up into the mountains of Gifu to experience the splendid heritage sites of Old Town Takayama and UNESCO-protected Shirakawa-go Village. See the popular must-sees of Japan in winter, whether you prefer modern Tokyo, traditional Kyoto, down-to-earth Osaka, or a perfect blend of them all. If you are a traveler in search of a delightful winter tour, Japan has plenty of attractions to enjoy in February.
