Furano is a farming town in the center of
Hokkaido, popular in summer for fields of brilliant purple
lavender blooms.
Furano is a small
farming town situated in central
Hokkaido near the city of Arashiyama. Furano was
originally settled by the indigenous Ainu until pioneers
from what is now Mie Prefecture came and set up
agrarian
homesteads. Although the city locally cultivates grapes,
potatoes, and corn, the outskirts are most popular in the
summer months for its vast fields of gorgeous lavender
flowers. Tomita Farm opened their lush lavender fields
to
the public for the annual flower-viewing season, and
quickly became a summer favorite among Hokkaido
vacationers. This celebrated farm also sells a variety of
lavender-based products, including lavender-favored ice
cream.
Often called the “navel” of Hokkaido, Furano’s inland
location contributes to its success in the wine industry.
The
Furano Winery has been aging local red and white wine
in
French oak barrels since 1972. The winery offers free
wine-tasting, and hosts a local wine festival in
September.
The town cheese factory is also well-liked, introducing
visitors to the production methods for their camembert-
style cheese. Other popular Furano attractions include
the
Blue Pond – a volcanic reservoir known for its rich
aquamarine color, and Furano Ski Resort, one of
Hokkaido’s most popular ski retreats.
