The lavender season in Hokkaido is a great
way
to escape the humid summer weather that
encompasses
many parts of Japan.
Hokkaido has two places where it
is
the best to see
lavenders. The city, Furano, created the Furano
Lavender no Mori, lavender field, in order to
commemorate the 80th anniversary of its municipal
government. Among the various summer lavender
fields
to visit in Furano, Farm Tomita (富田ファーム) is one
of
the most known and oldest lavender farms in the
region
of Hokkaido. It is privately owned land by the Tomita
family. It originally started out as a lavender
fragrance-
producing farm, but economic changes caused by the
importation of cheaper fragrances, forced the farm to
come up with alternative solutions. Lavender East is
one
of the largest lavender fields in Japan and is located
in
the Higashinaka District of Kamifurano Town. The rice
paddies in the area were converted into lavender
fields
in order to help produce the perfume ingredients.
Biei is small town in the center of Hokkaido and is
known for its lavender field like Furano. When
summer
rolls around and lavender is in full bloom, the gentle
hills
of Biei become filled with numerous visitors. The
lavender as well as other flowers can be seen in the
two
areas, Patchwork Road and Panorama Road. The
Northwestern Hill Observatory Park is shaped like a
white pyramid and is located on top of a slightly
sloping
hill in Patchwork Road. At the observatory you can
see
all the famous trees as well as the surrounding
lavender
fields. The pleasant lavender fragrance from these
fields
brings in many visitors to their areas.
