Kitsuki is a small castle town known for a pair
of
well-preserved samurai districts bordering the town’s
commercial center, as well as reconstructed Kitsuki
Castle
– the smallest of Japan’s feudal fortresses.
Kitsuki is a small town in Oita Prefecture, often
overlooked
by those looking for a feel of traditional Japan in favor of
centrally-located Kyoto. Yet it bears the proud distinction
of having not one but two vintage castle districts. The
northern district is characterized by high-class mansions
bordered by small, well-maintained gardens. The most
prominent is undoubtedly the Ohara Residence, former
abode of the local feudal lord’s principal retainers. The
earthen walls and thatched roof present a highly
classical
appeal, and the adjoining garden is a lovely sight not to
be
missed.
At the top of a hill sits a rebuilt Kitsuki Castle – said to
be
Japan’s littlest feudal keep. The castle’s exterior design
is
simplistic and plain, and houses a small city museum.
But
what brings visitors to see Kitsuki Castle is the ideal
location, having been built on a prominent hill
overlooking
the Seto Inland Sea.
