Lake Toya is a volcanic caldera lake in
Hokkaido’s verdant south, bordered on one side by
picturesque Mount Usu.
Lake Toya
is
a volcanic caldera lake in southern Hokkaido,
and claims the proud distinction of being the
northernmost
lake which never freezes. The lake is almost perfectly
circular, and roughly 10 kilometers from east to west.
Voted one of the 100 most beautiful landscapes of
Japan,
Lake Toyo’s pristine, transparently clear water surrounds
Nakajima Island, home of the Toya Lake Forest
Museum.
The lakeside features luxurious hot springs which are
popular spots to relax and take in the charming green
landscape. Though many of the baths are attached to
hotels, some are available to visitors for a modest fee.
The lake vista and neighboring volcano Showa Shinzan
are best seen from prominent viewpoints near the top of
stunning Mount Usu, accessible by the Usuzan
Ropeway.
By comparison, Showa Shinzan is a young mountain
reaching only 290 meters high, rising from a flat field
during the reign of Emperor Showa.
