Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival is held
from
the end of April to late May. The cherry blossom festival
is
held at Matsumae Park.
The Matsumae Cherry Blossom
Festival is held at
Matsumae Park from the end of April to late May. The
grounds of the park were once part of the Matsumae
Castle. North of the former castle there are over
10,000
cherry blossoms planted in rows across the area. You
can see over 250 varieties of the flower throughout
the
park, which is why the blooming period in the area
lasts
for a month. Also located in the northern vicinity there
is
a sakura (cherry blossom) museum that explains the
development of flower in Matsumae and shows the
different specimens planted all over the park.

During the Matsumae Cherry Blossom Festival there
are
a variety of events held like traditional music and
local
folk performances. There will also be food shops
available selling some local specialties. A long time
ago
a powerful samurai clan ruled the area, thus there is
a
march of armor clad warriors as one of the events.
There is a viewpoint that can be reached by hiking
trails
at the foot of Mount Shogun. About halfway up Mount
Shogun you will come across a hut that overlooks the
cherry blossoms in the Matsumae vicinity. It is a view
not to miss if you are planning to be there for the
blooming season.
