Mt Takasaki Monkey Park

Mt Takasaki Monkey Park

Mt. Takasaki Monkey Park is a popular monkey reserve that is located at the base of the mountain bordering Beppu and Oita City. There are about 1500 monkeys of the Japanese macaque species roaming freely.

Mt. Takasaki Monkey Park has about 1500 Japanese macaques freely roaming in the monkey reserve. The popular park is located at the base of the mountain that borders Beppu and Oita City. At the monkey park visitors are close enough to the mammals to see them eat, groom each other and play around. There are two troops of 700 to 800 monkeys that come down to the monkey park. One set enjoys the area in the morning and in the afternoon the next troop gets to have fun. Even though the mammals seem tamed they are still wild so it is recommended to not feed, touch or make direct eye contact with them.

Mt. Takasaki Monkey Park first opened in 1952 as both a reserve and tourist spot. This was due to the growing population of the Japanese macaque that they came up with a way to control it. By feeding the monkeys on a set schedule they stopped stealing food from the local farms. The facilities can be reached by a five minute walk from the parking lot up the hill then a second trek uphill that will take another five minutes. The second half can be skipped if you choose to ride the monorail for 100 yen round trip.
