Nagasaki is home to a tranquil Peace Park
built
in memory of the terrible nuclear attack during World
War
2, yet preserves a secret heart of Hidden Christian
Sites.
Nagasaki is the largest city of Nagasaki Prefecture, and
a
city that bears the significant and terrible distinction of
having been only one of two cities to experience the
horror
of nuclear destruction. In the aftermath of the nuclear
strike, Nagasaki dedicated some of the reclaimed area
as
a Peace Park with a great stretch of green lawn
bordered
all around by bushy green trees. The centerpiece of this
open space is a great statue which inspires visitors to
look
ahead to a future without nuclear weapons.
Nagasaki’s main UNESCO Heritage is the Hidden
Christian Sites, led prominently by Oura Cathedral – a
minor Roman Catholic Basilica dedicated to 26
Christians
who were killed on the order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Other
sites include the lavish Glover Mansion – opulent home
of
a former Scottish merchant, and the Dejima District – a
former island commerce district for the Dutch during the
isolationist Edo Period.
