Okinawa’s culture vastly differs from the mainland in Japan. The Ryukyu Islands, which is a part of the Okinawa Islands, is home of the Ryukyuan culture. Ryukyuan culture is native to Okinawa and was heavily influenced by Chinese culture until it fell under the control of the Satsuma clan. Okinawa also serves as the station for the US military base since 1972.
