Shimanami Kaido is a toll road that connects
the main
island of Honshu to the Shikoku Region. It passes
through six small islands located in the Seto Inland
Sea.
The toll road is 60 kilometers long and is also known as
the Nishiseto Expressway. Even though there are two
other land roads that connect the two regions, however
it is the only one where you can travel by foot and
bicycle. The entrance to the path is located at
Onomichi
City in Honshu and ends at Imbari City in Shikoku. The
highlight of travel this road is the beautiful scenery that
you pass by or stop at one of the observatories to soak
in the sights.
In 1999, the Shimanami Kaido first opened for use and
was made using modern bridge architecture. There are
a few attractions that you can enjoy while traversing the
route. On Ikuchijima Island there is a museum called
Hirayama Museum, which is dedicated to the famous
painter Hirayama Ikuo. There is also the Kosanji temple
that a rich businessman built for his mother. The
observatory on Oshima Island is one of the best places
to see all the bridges especially when the sun is
setting.
