Takachiho Gorge is located in the
center of the
Kyushu
Mountains in the northern part of Miyazaki Prefecture.
The narrow gorge was formed by the Gokase River
out
of the Aso lava. Through the erosion of the cooled
lava,
the sheer cliffs ended up looking like columns that
resemble dragon scales. Along this beautiful gorge is
a
600 meter walking trail that adorned with various
flowers
depending on the season. At the end of the trail you
will
end up at the Takachiho Shrine, which is in the city of
Takachiho. It is said that it is most known for being
the
place of a famous myth involving Amaterasu, the sun
goddess, hiding herself in a cave because of a cruel
prank by her brother.
One of the attractions you can enjoy seeing is the 17
meter high Minainotaki Waterfall. The water cascades
from the top and empties out into the Gokase River
below, which is an amazing sight. Aside from taking
the
walking trail you can choose to rent a boat and row
along the gentle river. It is an easy activity to try out
since the river is calm to navigate through. After
exploring the v shaped Takachiho Gorge, you can
relax
at a few restaurants and souvenir shops.
