Takamatsu’s central location in Kagawa
Prefecture makes the city an easy gateway to Shikoku’s
regional delights, possessing a number of exclusive
charms including beautiful Ritsurin Garden.
The city of Takamatsu is the capital of tiny Kagawa
Prefecture, and serves as a primary gateway into
Shikoku
for those traveling over the Great Seto Bridge. The city’s
main attraction is exquisite Ritsurin Garden, nationally
acclaimed as one of Japan’s most gorgeous landscape
gardens, with a history dating back to the early 17th
century. Designed by local samurai lords as a personal
relaxation spot, Ritsurin borrows the scenery of nearby
Mount Shiun, creating a picturesque backdrop to the
garden’s features. Those include a folk museum of local
handicraft, a grove of artfully trimmed black pines, and a
nearly 400-year old wooden teahouse where guests can
sip tea beside tranquil ponds full of colorful koi fish.
Stepping into nearby Shikoku Mura is like a trip back
into
Japan’s past. The Historic Village is an open-air
museum
exhibiting many old structures from the Edo and Meiji
Periods which were moved there from around the
region.
Among the farmhouses, storehouses, and other
buildings
on display are a sugar cane processing workshop, a
kabuki theater, a lighthouse, and a vine suspension
bridge.
